The master designer brings more than 35 years of experience as a designer/builder of custom construction to the design table with the house plans offered on this web site. He has a broad and diverse construction career in designing and building only custom projects where the first priority is not price and speed but seeking to design and build to the highest standard in materials and workmanship to provide the most durable and reliable structures for his clients that will hold up under even the severest conditions. He looks at the big picture to make long term costs low. His primary focus throughout his career is to design and build houses that have as low of an impact on the environment by designing and building houses that are low cost to maintain and highly energy efficient to effectively integrate sustainable renewable energy systems.
His knowledge is deeply rooted in a background of historical restorations working on houses and buildings that have already served the needs of many generations over more than a century. In this restoration work he learned what does and does not work in design, materials and workmanship over a long period of time. His role in this type of restoration was to bring these structures back to their former glory but also made them better through reproducing exterior cornices, trims and moldings out of materials that will not decay. He also modernized the structures with insulation, plumbing, electrical and heating and air conditioning. He designed and made restoration paints that would protect and preserve the exterior elements of the house.
He has extensive experience in remediation of modern houses that have failed: from foundations, rotting windows and doors, insect infestation, and serious structural damage. With these remediations, the fundamental causes of these failures were addressed and permanent solutions were implemented to resolve these issues in failure of design, materials, and workmanship.
He resists believing the propaganda of material manufacturers, having seen many of these products fail and having had the experience of replacing these materials. What has guided his design and construction are time tested materials and construction techniques that have been proven to be reliable over a long period of time. With his deep rooted commitment to excellence and continuing aim to make all things better, he has designed and built for his clients’ houses that have the highest thermal mass so that they can effectively take advantage of sustainable renewable energy systems.
